A curious trombo

Finally a shlong worth talking about at Graham... oh wait that doesn't sound good.

Just picked this bad boy on Saturday - if you look closely you might see a slightly bulbous tip... an elastic band was wrapped around the end to try and "enhance" the appearance. The elastic band broke after a few weeks when the girth was too much to take.

I roasted some big girthy strombos over the weekend. They completely filled my oven, but resulted in 8 cups of green slimy strombo goodness.

After roasting them, the seeds separated out nicely, and I used a spoon to scoop out the flesh.  With some onion, garlic, curry paste, spices and coconut milk, it made some DELICIOUS soup.

It's been a shlong time coming...

Here is Wolfy proudly displaying the first shlong picked - as seen in the photos it's 2 feet long with a nice little twist in it! It weights in at a whopping 451g!


My plan is to put it through a mandolin and make it into noodles!

I also tried making trombo chips... charcoaled them - did not taste so good.

We measured a couple of our long ones with the beast topping out at 52".

We tried deep frying tromboncino slices to make trombochips ... but even with some smokey paprika and salt they tasted awful ... apparently deep frying does not always taste good.

Next up we try them in the oven as per Corie and J.

Fall Fair 2014  -  The first picture is my "Collection of 5 distinct varieties of Vegetables".  It didn't win a prize because the competition was very stiff, but I was quite proud of it anyway, and the nice labels were commented on favourably!!! 

The second is my "Bounty of the Pender Islands" which came second so I didn't get my trophy for the third year in a row, which is probably a very good thing.  

The third is our harvest of peaches (don't laugh, Chris).  Nothing to do with the Fall Fair, but we are thrilled to bits because they are big and juicy and it's the first time we have ever had an edible crop worth mentioning.  Better things next year!

BTW the non-trombo-giant-maybe-pink-bana-squash is growing and growing and growing.  I bet it'll beat any of yours, Eddie!   However, no joy with trombos, regardless of name.

Graham update - hubbard, toms & peppers

It's been a shlong time since I last updated, but sadly not much shlongage to report. But the toms are in full force, and peppers are doing nicely (bear shown for scale, keep in mind he is a large bear, so tomatoes may appear smaller than they actually are).


And my two hubbards are looking great - one has reached the top of my apple tree! I'm keeping a close watch for vermins...

The Spring ...

We now have quite a few Tromboncinos that have been fertilized and are growing. We picked our second Tromboncino and dubbed "The Spring". Size reference included.

No, not our watermelon.  It's our trombos that are 45 inches.  And they're getting girthier every day!

Out first blue hubbard has been completely gorged by some critter! The entire insides have been removed. They had just started on the second one, but luckily we picked it just in time! They also got one of our butter cup squash.

The Weed Dragon

Giant Atlantic Dill update from Crescent Beach

A delayed update from the pumpkin patch ... all 3 plants are doing really well, no mildew on the leaves which is a big plus ... so it is looking like the milk treatment done last weekend helped. (or at least did not harm)

I have included a beer bottle in the picture for reference to size, measurements will be taken on Tuesday August 19th when I have some string and a tape measure.

Measurements are done in two ways, first is the circumference around the widest part of the pumpkin parallel to the ground, and the second is the over the top OTT method.

Pumpkin plant #2, this one is the most orange, but slightly strange shape.
Measurements: c =58"
Estimated Weight: 62lbs

The smallest of the three, on the largest plant #1 ... the best shape, will surely be the largest of the three pumpkins.
